(Jefferson City, MO) An initiative petition is circulating calling for the gas tax that was passed during the last session of the Missouri Legislature to go before a vote of the people. The Representative for the 118th District in Missouri, Mike McGirl, says even though the bill was approved by legislators, and signed by the Governor, the petition process could see the issue go to a vote instead.
The gas tax is set up to be a 12.5 cent tax that's spread out over 5 years for a 2.5 cent increase per year. Some Missourians say they felt taken by surprise to see the tax passed and not put to a vote of citizens.
