Iron County Jail Renovations Coming

(Ironton, MO) $2 million worth of renovations to the Iron County Jail could begin in May. The jail complex dates back to 1867 and it's needed help for many years. It has had no air conditioning, no fire sprinkler system, and is cold in the winter and hot in the summer due to it's limestone construction. The work could last 12 to 18 months. A new roof, HVAC system, plumbing, offices, better bathroom facilities, cell doors, and lighting are all slated for the project. The money is coming form funds out of the American Rescue Plan Act with half coming from the county and half from the government. The Missouri Department of Public Safety is distributing $10 million in ARPA funds to 40 counties in the state for jail improvements.
