Don Douglas Gaines Sr.

Don Douglas Gaines Sr., passed peacefully at home on September 12, 2024, surrounded by many of his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Gaines, his mother and father, Emma and Roy Gaines, and his brother, Paul Gaines.

Don is survived by his children, Don D. (Vicki) Gaines Jr., Francine Boylan, Greg Gaines, Tina Lahay, Kimberly (Andrew) Muniz, Carol Holloman, Debra (Ian) Hampden, and Dawn (James) Kelly, his grandchildren, Rhiannon Gutierrez, Kristin Gaines, Robert J. (Heather) Pool III, Zackery Pool, Faith Pool, Bryce Humphries, Marty Newkirk, Erin Boylan, Taylor (Brandon) Ziegler, Mitchell Hille, Austin (Andreia) Walker, Miranda (Zachary Harper) Walker, Renee (Timothy) Killian, Morgan (Brennan) Martin, and Robert (Savannah) Kelly, numerous great grandchildren, his brother, Rick Gaines, along with many other family members and friends.

Don retired from the Local Laborers Union. He proudly his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. Don and Fran took on many home renovations and were at their happiest taking them on together. What a beautiful team they were! As in any spouse’s duty and honor, Don took wonderful care of Fran until the end of her days on earth. He also had fun gambling and loved it when his adult children could join him. He enjoyed playing a good game of chess. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed being outdoors; swimming, mowing lawns and building decks.

Don was a faithful Chrisian and one of his favorite things was to sit outside, enjoying the sunshine, and reading from his Bible. While he’d greatly miss his family on earth, he was also eager to be reunited with his loved ones in Heaven.

Don brough warmth and joy to everyone he encountered. His passing will be mourned deeply by everyone who met and knew him.

Don gave in death as he gave in life; his final act of kindness was to gift his body to further medical research for future generations. A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.  Share your condolences and memories at cozeanfuneralhome.com.
