Potosi, Ste. Genevieve to Play for Class 3, District 2 Volleyball Championship

Ste. Genevieve, Mo. (KFMO) - Potosi and Ste. Genevieve will do battle for a district volleyball championship next week.

The semifinals were played Wednesday, with top-seed Potosi (22-9-1) facing off against 4-seed Central (15-17-1). The Lady Rebels came out firing, jumping out to a 7-3 lead in the first set before Lady Trojans head coach Ashley Matthews took an early timeout. That quick break seemed to get Potosi in the right frame of mind, as they were able to surpass the Lady Rebels and take the first set. The second and third sets were a little less dramatic, with the Lady Trojans leading most of the way as they cruised to a straight set victory, 25-22, 25-18, 25-20.

Potosi was led by Ava Robart, who recorded 17 kills. Eden Robart finished with 15. Blair Sitton led Central with 19 kills.

Our second semifinal was the rubber match of the Old Settlement rivalry, as 2-seed Valle Catholic (20-9-2) took on 3-seed Ste. Genevieve (21-9-2). In what was a rematch of the MAAA tournament championship just a few days prior, the Lady Warriors mounted a comeback in the first set, fighting back from a 7-1 Ste. Genevieve start to win the set in extra points. Another close set in Set 2 saw a Ste. Genevieve victory instead, tying things up at 1 set apiece. Set 3 was the turning point, with the Dragons taking another early lead, but unlike the first set, Valle Catholic was not able to mount a serious comeback effort as the Dragons cruised to win the set. Finally, Ste. Genevieve won the fourth set in front of a fired up home crowd, securing the four set victory, 24-26, 25-23, 25-17, 25-17.

Emma Gegg and Kailyn Harmon led Ste. Genevieve in kills, they each had 10. Valle Catholic senior Abree Zipprich had 9 kills, with fellow seniors Brooklyn Weibrecht and Addi Donze coming through with 8 each.

The championship game between Potosi and Ste. Genevieve will be played Tuesday, October 29. The Dragons have won both previous meetings between the two teams in the 2024 season.
