(St. Louis, MO) The St. Louis Cardinals have lost back-to-back games to open the four game series with the San Diego Padres. Tuesday night the Cardinals let a middle innings lead slip away losing 7-5.
San Diego’s Luis Arraez was 3-for-5 and Manny Machado homered, his second of the series. Machado’s homerun sparked a four-run second inning that erased a 2-0 deficit.
St. Louis (65-67) regained the lead in the fifth with Paul Goldschmidt’s two-run homer in a three-run inning. Goldschmidt was 3-for-3.
John King takes the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of relief. Miles Mikolas, who allowed the four second inning runs, pitched 5.2 innings and struck out three.
Dylan Cease started for the Padres but was chased after 4.1 innings pitched amidst the big Cardinal fifth. He struck out four and walked four. Yuki Matsui earned the win.
The Cardinals left the base loaded in the bottom of the second and third innings.
