Missouri Veterans’ Medal and Medallion Design Submission Deadline Extended

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program, in collaboration with the Missouri Veterans Commission, has extended the deadline for submitting designs for a new Veterans’ medal and medallion. Originally scheduled for earlier this year, the new deadline is now set for October 31, 2024.

Governor Mike Parson signed legislation on July 11, 2024, expanding the Missouri Veterans Recognition Program to honor Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, and Operation Allies Refuge. The new medallion will be created specifically to recognize Veterans who served in these operations.

The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program is seeking design submissions for the front side of both the medal and medallion. The designs should not resemble any current military or Missouri National Guard medals, ribbons, or awards. Artists and designers interested in submitting their work can do so by emailing their designs to ng.mo.vets@army.mil or by mailing them to:

Missouri Veterans Recognition Program
P.O. Box 1808
Jefferson City, MO 65102

For any questions regarding the submission process, individuals can contact the program through the toll-free number (866) 834-3431 or at (573) 638-9561. Specific submission guidelines can be found on the Missouri National Guard’s website: moguard.ngb.mil/resources/veteran-awards.

The new act outlines eligibility for the medal and medallion. Veterans who served on active duty during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, or Operation Allies Refuge, and are legal residents of Missouri, or were at the time of entry or discharge from military service, are eligible. Missouri National Guard members who served during these operations, regardless of residency, also qualify.

The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program has a long history of honoring service members, dating back to April 23, 1919, when the Missouri General Assembly passed a law recognizing Veterans of the Spanish American War, Mexican Border Service, and World War I. Since its inception, the program has expanded to include recognition for Veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.

This new initiative continues Missouri’s commitment to honoring its Veterans and their service to the nation.
