Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) are alerting the public to a new telephone scam targeting residents across the state.
In recent weeks, reports have surfaced from both the St. Louis area and the Poplar Bluff region, where individuals have been contacted by someone posing as a trooper involved in a motor vehicle crash investigation. In these incidents, the scammer attempts to extort money from the victim, often using intimidation tactics, including false threats of impending or nonexistent legal charges or court proceedings.
The MSHP wants to remind the public that its officers will never contact individuals to solicit money or demand payment for any reason. The Patrol does not process bonds or accept money in exchange for avoiding charges or legal actions. Authorities advise residents to remain vigilant and cautious. If someone asks you to send money, assume it is a scam. Take the time to verify any claims by contacting official numbers you find on verified websites, and never share personal information with a potential scammer. If you or someone you know has been targeted by this type of scam, please report the incident to your local MSHP Troop Headquarters.
